Angry NHL fans tee off on Jimmy's Final Solution for Nashville, Phoenixand Carolina - July 17, 2007

By JIMMY D / NHL fans angry with Jimmy's NHL solutions | Jimmy's archive

We just endured the slowest week in fantasy sports with almost zero action (Tour de France doesn’t count, sorry).

So with the baseball All-Star Game over and with serious NFL training camps information still weeks away, it was time to clean out the Jimmy email bag.

Chilly replies to Ice Age column

It seems Jimmy’s NHL franchise solutions from last week didn’t sit well with at least one fan in Raleigh. Jimmy opined that the Carolina franchise should be sent back to Hartford and that the 45 actual fans in Raleigh be re-located with the team.

One of those 45 fans emailed Jimmy to protest this proposed move to Connecticut.

“Maybe you have too much time on your hands up there in Halifax (shouldn't you be busy enjoying the summer instead, winter is right around the corner?) and you started writing fiction instead of properly analyzing NHL,” stated O. Popovic.

Now, Jimmy feels like a fiction writer, darnit.

Jimmy was also branded a ‘jerk’ by OilerJet, but I think he/she misunderstood Jimmy’s point. Jimmy suggested that Phoenix relocate back to Winnipeg and was chastising free agents like Michael Nylander who seemed to avoid signing with Edmonton because of its perceived remoteness.

“What is with the Winnipeg weather bashing? It's not ‘cold’ in summer in Winnipeg? I’ll bet we have hotter summers than Halifax does....so stop saying crap like ‘too hot in the desert, too cold in Winterpeg’.”

Which wasn’t what Jimmy said at all – he was giving kudos to the folks in Winnipeg for being hardy enough to handle tough winters.

Now, Jimmy feels like a jerk, darnit.

Guthrie bombs

Figures that after nearly a dozen excellent starts and still remaining under the radar, Jimmy’s clever waiver-wire acquisition of Oriole pitcher Jeremy Guthrie turned out to be not so clever.

“Nice call on Guthrie idiot! You certainly seem to put the hex on people. Reggie Willits was doing great for me until you blabbed. Quit typing about my players, yer gonna cost me the league!” typed an angry BaltBoy.

Indeed, the former Mormon missionary got clobbered last week, giving up nine hits (two dingers), walking three and giving up six runs in less than four innings. He is scheduled to throw tonight at Seattle against Felix Hernandez. Let’s see how he meets that challenge before jumping off the bandwagon.

Now, Jimmy feels like an idiot, darnit.

Sorry for Souray

Jimmy,
I think the Oilers did a great job in bringing in Sheldon Souray after they got shut out in the first few days of free agency. I think he can be a real fantasy bonus there for years to come. What’s your take on the Souray signing?
HabLover

Dear HabLover,
First, Jimmy never really liked Souray (hate all Devils and former Devils). Second, past performance is not always the best way to project future performance.

Third, even if it is, is this what you want on your fantasy roster? The dude scored 19 power-play goal after getting just 14 in the previous eight seasons combined. Fourth, the dude was minus 28 last year and a combined -51 in his five partial seasons in Montreal.

Fifth, he never scored 40 points in a season before last year, despite the hardware in his injured wrist that led then-coach Claude Julien call it a ‘bionic wrist.’

Sixth, there is no sixth. Jimmy thinks he is a handsome devil who just got overpaid and God bless him.

Now, Jimmy feels like an anti-Souray meanie, darnit.

Wacko for Jacko

JimmyD,
It’s early for this, but we were talking about NFL drafts the other day and the topic of first-round picks came up. Obviously Tomlinson goes first on everyone’s board, but we had a range of opinion at number two – from Tom Brady with all those new wide receivers and Peyton Manning because he is Peyton Manning to Shaun Alexander having a rebound season. Who would you take second if you had to pick today?
Charles

Hey Charles,
In standard NFL fantasy formats, running backs are usually the most sought-after players. Last year, Yahoo! had running backs listed with nine of the Top 10 preseason ranks.

Many will advise you to take Larry Johnson of the Chiefs at No. 2 and others would advise you to take Carson Palmer ahead of Brady (who seems more focused on babes than football, which is understandable when you are talking the quality of babes that Tom is cozy with; Bridget Moynahan, who is pregnant with his child and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, with whom he is currently shacked up).

Sorry, digressed on the hot-chick front.

Anyway, Jimmy would be taking St. Louis Ram horse Steven Jackson at No. 2, with serious consideration to 49er beast Frank Gore. Jackson had a dynamite 2006 and defenses won’t be able to focus on him alone with top fantasy QB Marc Bulger chucking to Isaac Bruce, Torrie Holt and fresh free agent meat Drew Bennett.

Jimmy would take Jackson.

Now, Jimmy feels like he tipped his hand for the NFL draft. Darnit.

Stay busy, stay lucky.
