By JIMMY D / Average draft position is key draft tool | Jimmy's archive
So you’re a Yankee fan, a Derek Jeter fan and you really think you owe it to him and to your fantasy team to make him your first pick in this weekend’s baseball draft.
Two things come immediately to mind for Jimmy.
- Give your head a shake
- Do you care that in thousands of online drafts, he has never been taken higher than the 13th pick and his ADP (average draft position) is 18.6?
ADP is nice tool for comparing your draft list against what poolies around the world have been doing in mock drafts and real drafts that take place online. For argument’s sake, we are assuming 5X5 mixed leagues in our numbers.
You can see that, in thousands of online drafts, Jeter was never taken higher than 13th and never lower than 29th. So if you have him somewhere in this range with your draft order, chances are you won’t be ridiculed if you holler his name too early. And you will know that hoping for him to drop to the 40s for your fourth-round selection is likely to happen.
You will be able to see that letting Albert Pujols slide past the No. 1 pick is a foolhardy move and that he goes first in almost every draft on the planet. His ADP is 1.1 and he never fell below third.
Johan Santana and Alfonso Soriano were the only other players taken with the top pick and Jimmy continues to project a monster year for Soriano at Wrigley.
Philly slugger Ryan Howard, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes and Yankee 3B Alex Rodriguez were the only other players to justify a No. 2 selection.
You like emerging power speedster Carl Crawford? He never went higher than third or lower than 10th.
Philly 2B Chase Utley? Never higher than 4th or lower than 13th.
Carlos Beltran? 5 and 16.
David Ortiz? 5 and 19.
Vladdy Guerrero? 7 and 16.

More recent baseball news
Boston
Julian Tavarez is in as the fifth starter and Jonathan Papelbon is confirmed as the closer.
Philly
Freddy Garcia will shake off mild biceps tendonitis and be ready to go Opening Day. The guy is a horse. Jon Lieber may start the year on the DL, but he is also earmarked for bullpen duty instead of the starting rotation.
Yankees
Chien-Ming Wang will miss April after popping a hamstring. The 19-game winner from last season tumbles a bit on your draft chart and gives likely fifth-starter candidates Darrell Rasner and Jeff Karstens a modicrum of early fantasy value.
Marlins
Jeremy Hermida may miss the first bit of the season with a deep bone bruise. Not encouraging news for a guy who missed 63 games last year to hip flexor and ankle stress fracture problems.
Jimmy Madness Update
Jimmy continues to dominate all his bracket contests. As he mentioned last week, he ended up with all eight of his Elite Eight teams and moved Georgetown, Florida and UCLA through to the Final Four (missing only Ohio State).
For those who can still make round-by-round picks, Jimmy has Georgetown meeting Florida in the final with the tough Gators winning it all.
Jimmy is in the top one per cent of all Yahoo! players.
Good work Jimmy.
No ordinary Joe
Jimmy attended Sunday’s Avalanche/Canucks game in Vancouver and two facts stood out in the 5-4 shootout. First, don’t ditch Joe Sakic from your keeper pool, because he can still fly and was the best player on the ice all night.
Second, Jose Theodore has lost it, despite the fact he earned the victory.
Peter Budaj was yanked and Theodore got the win, but he looked tentative and unconfident.
Jimmy is still not certain that Budaj is the answer in Colorado, but he played much better, moves well and has great quickness.
Stay busy, stay lucky and good luck in your baseball drafts this week.
